Raila Odinga Hands Over ODM Leadership to Governor Nyong’o

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has formally handed over the leadership of the party to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o in an acting capacity. This move is aimed at enabling Odinga to focus on his campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.

Governor Nyong’o Takes the Reins

During a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa on Saturday, Odinga praised Nyong’o for providing a firm foundation to the party since its inception over 20 years ago. Nyong’o will now be responsible for steering the opposition party forward, ensuring the continuation of ODM’s ideologies.

A Smooth Transition

Odinga expressed his gratitude to party members and supporters for their hard work and dedication over the years. He emphasized the importance of ideological continuity and clarity, which have been the hallmarks of ODM.

New Appointments Ratified

The NEC meeting also ratified recent appointments made by the Central Committee, following the departure of senior officials who took up roles in the national government. The new appointments include:

  • Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga as the new National Chairperson, replacing John Mbadi
  • Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Vihiga Senator as Deputy Party Leaders, replacing Cabinet Secretaries Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Joho
  • Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu as Secretary for Political Affairs, replacing Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi
